![]() Her visits to Portge proved a turning point, when Gale discovered that the people of her hometown were a source of literary material. Gale then spent six years as a journalist in Milwaukee and New York. She graduated in 1899 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a Masters in Literature. ∼Zona Gale was born August 26, 1874, in Portage. She was also a member of the National Women's Party and and lobbied for Wisconsin Equal Rights laws she was very active in this in 1921. She was best known for Mrs LuLu Bett which won a Pulitzer Prize for best Drama in 1920. She first became noticed for her short story series Friendship Village in 1908.
